Ep. 328: Dominic Escalante

Dominic Escalante on change, redemption and living a good life

In this compelling episode of PeppTalks With Jeanne, host Jeanne Pepper sits down with Dominic Escalante to explore a journey of radical change and what it took to become an honorable man after drug addiction and prison time.

Raised in the Inland Empire of Southern California by his single mother, Marysol, Dominic grew up alongside his three brothers in an environment where the absence of a father figure and systemic pressure created significant hurdles. His early life was marked by a happy homelife with his family, High school came easy for him. Because of his natural intelligence and academic success in high school, he was given a full scholarship to a liberal arts college in Arizona. However, his exposure to drug use and addiction in his early years caught up with him after he finished college. Perhaps, it ended well for him when a judge ordered him to serve a three year sentence because it was that incarceration that forced him to confront the darkest aspects of his trajectory and kept him alive and off drugs long enough for him to be truly rehabilitated and ready to start his adult life.

Refusing to be defined by his past, Dominic committed himself to recovery and education. Through sheer determination and the support of his loving family, he transitioned into the professional world and now works as a successful restaurant manager. His journey of Post-Traumatic Growth was further tested in 2023 by the tragic loss of his youngest brother — an event that only deepened his resolve to share his lived experience.

The conversation goes beyond the surface, examining the systemic challenges faced by young men in communities like Dominic’s, the profound internal shift required to break the cycle of addiction, and how he continues to navigate grief while maintaining his commitment to a good life. His story is not just about survival, but about the active pursuit of purpose — and what it truly takes to rewrite your own narrative.

In Loving Memory of Johnnie Rocky Escalante

Johnnie Rocky Escalante was born April 20, 1999. Johnnie was a young vibrant soul and an exceptionally gifted musician when he passed away tragically on May 6, 2023. Born and raised in the Inland Empire of Southern California, Johnny was a beacon of creativity and passion, known by those close to him for his infectious energy and his unwavering dedication to his craft.

From a young age, Johnnie found his voice through music. He was an aspiring artist who spent countless hours honing his sound, blending raw emotion with a unique melodic sensibility that captured the spirit of his upbringing. His music was more than just a hobby; it was his way of navigating the world, expressing his dreams, and connecting with his community. To those who knew him, Johnny was not just a musician, but a storyteller whose lyrics reflected the complexities, struggles, and hopes of a generation.

Johnnie leaves behind a grieving but proud family, including his mother, Marysol, and his three brothers, including Dominic. Though his life was cut short, the impact of his spirit remains. He was a young man who looked toward the future with ambition, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of his family and fellow artists.
