Beth Krom

Former Mayor of Irvine

“She passed every test of the very best in humanity with flying colors.”

Beth Krom is a distinguished former politician and public official who dedicated 16 years to public service on the Irvine City Council, serving two terms as Mayor of Irvine (2004–2008) and three non-consecutive terms as a Councilmember. Originally a teacher and business owner, Krom was inspired to run for office after becoming a central figure in the movement to prevent a commercial airport at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station. This victory is widely considered her signature political achievement, transforming the abandoned base into what would become the Orange County Great Park.

As Mayor, Krom championed initiatives focused on environmental stewardship, smart growth, and integrated transportation, notably presiding over the launch of the iShuttle commuter program. Her focus on quality of life and public safety saw Irvine earn recognition as the Safest Big City in America multiple times and as one of the "100 Best Communities for Young People." Furthermore, she oversaw prudent fiscal management that substantially increased the city's contingency reserves.

Following her departure from the City Council in 2016, Krom embarked on a new career as a consultant, candidate coach, and creative wordsmith. She utilizes her deep understanding of politics and community engagement to help prospective public servants master the art of communication and campaign development. In 2021, she published her book, Run Like You've Won: A Candidate's Guide to Developing a Strong Message, Raising What You Need, and Exciting the Electorate, drawing on lessons learned from her own successful political campaigns.

Beth Krom remains an active voice in civic affairs and an advocate for democracy, lending her expertise to advisory boards and continuing to work directly with business, education, and non-profit partners in the community she has called home since 1985. Her legacy is defined by her unwavering commitment to community building and her dedication to a well-planned, vibrant future for Irvine.

After the personal tragedy of losing her 22 year old son Noah, she stepped back from politics but her commitment to Irvine remains.   She also discusses her efforts following Noah’s death to reform building safety codes in Santa Barbara to prevent another accidental death like his.   She has cared for her disabled husband for almost thirty years. Beth inspires all around her to get up and do something when things aren’t right in this world - a true activist.  Her life work has not gone unnoticed.
